Does water have calories?
No. Plain water has zero calories — tap, filtered, bottled, still or sparkling. Calories come only from protein, carbohydrate, fat and alcohol, and water contains none of them. Tonic water, sweetened flavored waters and coconut water do have calories, because they are no longer just water.

Why plain water is exactly zero
Food energy comes from four things and nothing else: protein and carbohydrate at 4 calories a gram, fat at 9, and alcohol at 7. Those are the Atwater factors every nutrition label in the country is built on. Water is a single molecule containing none of them, so the arithmetic returns zero — not “almost nothing” or “a negligible amount”, but nothing.
That holds for every form plain water takes. Carbonation is dissolved gas. Minerals in mineral water are elements, not macronutrients. Filtering removes things rather than adding them. A gallon of water and a sip of water contain the same number of calories, which is none.
What does have calories
The confusion is almost always about drinks that look like water and are not. Per 12 fl oz (355 ml), roughly a standard can:
Tonic water is the one that catches people out. It sits beside the club soda, looks identical, and carries about as much sugar as a cola — because it is a sweetened soft drink wearing water’s name.
Does drinking water make you gain weight?
On the scale, briefly — and it is not fat. Water weighs about a pound per pint, so drinking 16 fl oz shows up as roughly a pound the moment you step on. That weight is the water itself, and it leaves over the following hours. Gaining body fat requires a surplus of energy, and water supplies none.
This is the single most common reason a scale reading looks alarming for no reason, and the argument for judging weight on a weekly trend rather than any one morning. Day-to-day swings of two or three pounds from water, sodium and food volume are ordinary.
Can water help with weight loss?
Indirectly, and modestly. Water taken before or during a meal adds volume without energy, which can leave you fuller on fewer calories. Replacing sweetened drinks with water removes real calories — that is where the actual effect lives, and it can be substantial for anyone drinking soda daily.
You may also see claims about “water-induced thermogenesis” — that drinking water raises energy expenditure. Small studies have reported an effect; later attempts to replicate it found it smaller or absent. Treat it as unsettled and too minor to plan around. The reliable mechanism is the boring one: what water displaces.
What this means for tracking
Log plain water as water, never as food. If a drink is sweetened, flavored, or is a juice wearing water’s name, log it as a drink and check the label — that is where the calories you did not expect are hiding.
